(Graduation) Obama Grants for Mothers: Money to Attend College
No commentsBy Fred Jackson
Education is always an important key to a good future. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.
College expenses continue to increase even as the economy slumps. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. With high costs looming, many young adults can’t afford to go to a university. A large number of these people are working mothers. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. It’s important to the President and that’s why he’s implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. Although they are the same, many people refer to Federal Pell grants as Obama grants. In the 2009-2010 school year, students could get a grant of up to $5,350. This is an increase of $1,000 over the previous maximum, and the goal is to help working mothers return to school. These grants can be used to cover many of the miscellaneous college expenses.
Single moms should also consider the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. At less expensive schools in particular this is a big credit. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Moms and students of all kinds can go to school with a little less to worry about.
Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President’s goals. Through the recent stimulus package, many undergraduate and graduate loans will be less of a burden. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. To attend a 2-year college has a number of benefits, including saving money and learning a trade or skill.
In his Reclaiming the American Dream speech in 2007, Obama said, “We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That’s the best investment we can make in our future.” The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. Grants for moms are just a small but vital part of the education mission. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
