(Graduation quotes) The School Zone Advantage: Where Technology Meets Tradition
No commentsBy Randy Johnson1
The arrival and rapid dissemination of digital technology in the last few decades of the 20th century have fundamentally changed how children learn. Children have spent their entire lives around cell phones, email, computers, video games, and digital music players. According to Marc Prensky - internationally acclaimed education and learning expert by the time kids finish college, the average student will have spent 5,000 hours of their lives reading, but over 10,000 hours playing video games. The result of this highly-interactive, digital environment is clear todays children think and process information fundamentally differently than their parents.
Todays children use technological tools for nearly every aspect of their lives, and while school systems are beginning to integrate these tools into the classroom, a balance between the advantages of technology and traditional teaching methods need to be struck both inside and outside the classroom.

The Key to the Future: Obama Scholarships for Moms
By Fred Jackson
Education is always an important key to a good future. Since his campaign to become President, Barack Obama has made education a key issue. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.
Although the economy has dramatically fallen, college prices have continued to rise for many years. Scholarship packages rarely cover the full amount for tuition, books and housing. Unfortunately some students turn away from higher education because it’s too expensive. Working, single mothers are particularly hit hard. Not only does educating mothers help provide for their families, but it also improves the workforce. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. Currently students can earn about $5,350 through a Pell grant. For mothers and other students, this is increase of available money is valuable help. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money.
There’s also another great program: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. Especially for less expensive schools, $4,000 could be a significant help for a student. Both of these tax programs help single moms tremendously because they are traditionally low-income individuals. There are almost no restrictions on where and what a student studies. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.
Obama’s efforts to improve education show that he takes this issue seriously. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. In addition, the government is focusing on helping schools improve teaching and students improve performance. The President believes community colleges need to become viable options. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions.
“We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That’s the best investment we can make in our future.” Those are the words of President Obama in his 2007 speech Reclaiming the American Dream. The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. Grants for moms are just a small but vital part of the education mission. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
